The TDI series has always interested me. But I'm a big guy, and even the Passat feels small for me.
You definitely drop into something of a cockpit in our Jetta (it's the wagon version, so hardly small overall, but…)
The fuel mileage on the TDIs is amazing, though. It's nearly criminal the US doesn't get more high efficiency diesels on the market. Ford makes a Focus diesel variant… and only sells it in Europe and the UK.
Chevy makes an efficient small turbo diesel for my Trailblazer, but never brought it to the US. I would have bought it in a second. But yeah, I gotta at least get a mid size SUV or a full sized car. Otherwise… well, it ain't pretty watching me get in and out.
