Really don't think the guys with the stacks of church pamphlets are going to reach a receptive/target audience by hitting houses with someone home in the middle of the morning on a Sunday.

Actually, that's not fair – that probably IS their target audience… which means they've defined thier audience as "people who don't want our product."
My assumption is that they are looking for former church-goers who might be looking for a place, which would make it a fine time to do it. Alternately, they are looking for former church-goers who still associate the time with churchgoing and will feel guilty for being caught at home, which is kind of dickish.
