{"id":12293,"date":"2015-01-06T11:35:34","date_gmt":"2015-01-06T18:35:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/?p=12293"},"modified":"2017-01-26T22:19:50","modified_gmt":"2017-01-27T05:19:50","slug":"i-am-a-nerd-take-two","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/index.php\/2015\/01\/i-am-a-nerd-take-two\/","title":{"rendered":"I am a Nerd (take two)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Class reunion<br \/>\nnot exactly <em>fun<\/em><br \/>\nuntil the third rum<br \/>\nand Coke.<br \/>\nThen one school chum<br \/>\ninterrupts the hum<br \/>\nand buzz<br \/>\nand half-drunken fuzz<br \/>\nfor a joke.<br \/>\nHis Genuine Draft thunks down<br \/>\n(the emblematic drink of this small midwestern town)<br \/>\nand he says<br \/>\n&#8220;So&#8230; Doyce<br \/>\n&#8220;&#8230; are you still a nerd?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(Before I proceed, a disclaimer<br \/>\nabout this guy, not me,<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s<br \/>\na bit of a skeeze<br \/>\nhe might say he hasn&#8217;t let the years change him<br \/>\nI might say he hasn&#8217;t changed his denim<br \/>\nWranglers. Might be the same pair<br \/>\nhe wore down there<br \/>\nunder his gown, where<br \/>\nhe stood up with the rest of us<br \/>\nmortarboard on like the rest of us<br \/>\nall the way down at the end of the line<br \/>\nfiftieth out of forty-nine<br \/>\ndiploma-receiving graduates.<\/p>\n<p>See,<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s<br \/>\nnot so much &#8216;chum like a friend you meet&#8217;<br \/>\nas &#8216;chum like that stuff sharks eat&#8217;<br \/>\nno real friend of mine<br \/>\nand, certainly, it would feel sickly sublime<br \/>\nto simply dismiss him this time,<br \/>\nask how his wife likes the wine<br \/>\nor how it feels standing in line<br \/>\nfor unemployment.<\/p>\n<p>But there would be no enjoyment.)<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re all <em>together<\/em> here<br \/>\nFeeling the booze and beer<br \/>\nand good cheer<br \/>\nsitting at folding tables<br \/>\ntelling each other fables.<br \/>\nabout the last twenty-five years.<\/p>\n<p>So rather than rage,<br \/>\nI decide to engage<br \/>\nand say:<br \/>\n&#8220;A nerd? Me?<br \/>\nLet&#8217;s see.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not going to waste time talking<br \/>\nabout roleplaying games, walking<br \/>\nto school every day hauling<br \/>\nthree bursting gym bags full of rule books.<br \/>\nAnd all the funny looks.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, you know that already, you were there<br \/>\nAnd at the time, it&#8217;s not like I cared<br \/>\nWhat anyone thought<br \/>\nWhat kind of stares I got.<br \/>\nNo one was going to kick my ass<br \/>\nNot when there were only fifty kids in our class<br \/>\nAnd the biggest nerds in school at the time<br \/>\nWere five of the varsity football front line.<\/p>\n<p>No: let&#8217;s move forward in time.<\/p>\n<p>Am I a nerd?<\/p>\n<p>The person who convinced me to write my first book<br \/>\nI met in college when she came over to look<br \/>\nat photocopied posters for a local gaming convention<br \/>\n(my personal invention)<br \/>\nwhich me and my friends were hanging&#8230; on every wall in campus.<br \/>\nAnd she wanted to ask us<br \/>\nif we&#8217;d ever played<br \/>\nVampire: the Masquerade.<br \/>\n(We&#8217;re still close today.<br \/>\nI introduced her to her husband at one of those college game days.<br \/>\nTheir daughter&#8217;s name is Ray.)<\/p>\n<p>Am I a nerd?<\/p>\n<p>My first job after graduation:<br \/>\nA friend said &#8220;Hey, this guy&#8217;s the one<br \/>\nWe should pay to come<br \/>\nto Denver.<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s literate, savvy, never<br \/>\nbacks down from learning something new.<br \/>\nJust the guy for the tech support crew.&#8221;<br \/>\nWhat he didn&#8217;t mention when they made their choice<br \/>\nWas he&#8217;d never <em>met<\/em> me, or heard my voice.<br \/>\nThe only handshakes we&#8217;d ever exchanged<br \/>\nWere via modem, connecting in the 2400 baud range.<br \/>\nFor him, my qualifying certificate<br \/>\nWas building a text-only, multi-user dungeon<br \/>\non the internet.<\/p>\n<p>Am I a nerd?<\/p>\n<p>My <em>wife<\/em> and I met Online,<br \/>\nthe story of our times<br \/>\nbut a dating site? Tame.<br \/>\nWe met playing video games<br \/>\nSaving the world with ice and flame<br \/>\nOr bows and blades<br \/>\nLooting digital upgrades.<br \/>\nFrom twenty-player raids.<br \/>\nDorks, right?<br \/>\nOur date nights<br \/>\nWere orc fights.<br \/>\nSure, we became friends because we&#8217;re clever and witty<br \/>\nAnd had things in common, like saving Paragon City.<br \/>\nBut you know what charmed her<br \/>\nWhat floated her<br \/>\nboat?<br \/>\n<em>I<\/em> kept up with her Buffy the Vampire Slayer quotes.<\/p>\n<p>Am I nerd?<\/p>\n<p>My kids would say yes<br \/>\nif I had to guess.<br \/>\nMy daughter, nine, at recess<br \/>\nplays the part of a zombie princess<br \/>\nscary, but cool, in a ragged black dress.<br \/>\nLeading her armies onto the field<br \/>\nwith a magic sword only she can wield.<br \/>\n(The other kid gets an unbreakable shield.)<br \/>\nDoes she get teased?<br \/>\nNot that I&#8217;ve seen<br \/>\nAnd if so, she&#8217;d handle it better than me.<br \/>\n&#8220;You know who&#8217;s a nerd?!?&#8221; She shouts to the school.<br \/>\n&#8220;<em>I<\/em> am&#8230; but all of you are, too.&#8221;<br \/>\nA nerd, she explains,<br \/>\nis just a name<br \/>\nFor someone who gets excited about video games<br \/>\nOr Science, or Music, going to space,<br \/>\nreading a book with a grin on your face.<br \/>\nThe local sports teams, shooting some pics,<br \/>\nor baking souffl\u00e9s with just the right <em>lift<\/em>.<br \/>\nNerds just <em>care<\/em><br \/>\nabout something<br \/>\nso much<br \/>\nthey scare<br \/>\nyou.<\/p>\n<p>So you ask me this question to\u2026 what?<br \/>\nMake me blush?<br \/>\nSee if my spirit is easily crushed?<br \/>\nI can\u2019t even guess<br \/>\nso let me address<br \/>\nthe query<br \/>\nwith something far less<br \/>\nthan indignant fury.<br \/>\n&#8220;A nerd? Me?<br \/>\n&#8220;Yes.<br \/>\n&#8220;Absolutely.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He says:<br \/>\n\u201cWow. Okay.<br \/>\n\u201cI just wanted to see<br \/>\n\u201cIf you liked what they did with the new Hobbit movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And my wife,<br \/>\nthus far silent throughout the exchange<br \/>\ncries out in pain<br \/>\n\u201cOH GOD!<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026 now he\u2019s <em>really<\/em> going to get going.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Class reunion not exactly fun until the third rum and Coke.
