{"id":1739,"date":"2009-10-13T10:36:43","date_gmt":"2009-10-13T16:36:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/?p=1739"},"modified":"2009-10-13T10:38:39","modified_gmt":"2009-10-13T16:38:39","slug":"quick-notes-on-the-frankfurttoc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/index.php\/2009\/10\/quick-notes-on-the-frankfurttoc\/","title":{"rendered":"Quick Notes on the #FrankfurtTOC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Frankfurt TOC (Tools of Change) conference took place today, as part of the Frankfurt Book Fair (going on this week). \u00a0Like the TOC Conference earlier this year, FrankfurtTOC had a lot of folks there twittering the coolest ideas, giving a kind of stop-motion summary of the talks taking place.<\/p>\n<p>What follows are the posts I saw that intrigued me in one way or another.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ON PUBLISHING<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Think digital first, print maybe.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on your verticals &#8211; the reason why genre fiction works in digital.<\/li>\n<li>Digital change is completely changing the publishing industry. Nobody has THE RIGHT to survive.<\/li>\n<li>Publishers need to think like Games Developers <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/bxSCv\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/bxSCv<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>ON WEB PRESENCE<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Publishers\/Writers should create a life-long URL for each work &#8220;don&#8217;t be fooled into allowing others control of your metadata&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>ON DRM<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>DRM: &#8220;Retailers want to own the customer.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>The use of &#8220;unprotected&#8221; to describe DRM-free is very objectionable. Why not &#8220;unrestricted?&#8221; @doctorow<\/li>\n<li>Any time someone mentions &#8220;interoperability&#8221; and &#8220;DRM&#8221; in the same breath, they&#8217;re engaged in wishful thinking. @doctorow<\/li>\n<li>If DRM is always broken, in what sense does it &#8220;protect&#8221;? Restricts use, restricts interop, doesn&#8217;t protect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>ON AVAILABILITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Let readers buy the book [as a bundle in all possible formats] &amp; allow the reader to choose the format they want. <strong>(I just suggested that like&#8230; two weeks ago.)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>&#8230;making &#8220;All books available to All&#8221;&#8230; one of the most ambitious ventures in the book industry. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/bIW1H\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/bIW1H<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>ON THE FUTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The best way to predict the future is to invent it. @v_clayssen<\/li>\n<li>Substantial increase in Android Market. Looking at graph suggests in 2 years will have caught up with Apple app store<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Books: the fastest growing category in iTunes AppStore.&#8221; @innOva<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>My impression:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Publishing, at the moment, is stuck.
