I&#8217;ll keep her out of trouble.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dizzy seemed to understand as well, for all it seemed as though she didn&#8217;t understand much else (it was how she got her name): Jake was the teacher, and if she didn&#8217;t know what to do, she&#8217;d follow his lead.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11029\" src=\"http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2002-02-18-jake-diz-sleep.jpg\" alt=\"2002-02-18 jake-diz-sleep\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2002-02-18-jake-diz-sleep.jpg 1600w, http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2002-02-18-jake-diz-sleep-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2002-02-18-jake-diz-sleep-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Jake taught me how to have a puppy, so I&#8217;d be ready for Dizzy.<\/p>\n<p>Jake taught Dizzy how to take care of the family.<\/p>\n<p>A year ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/index.php\/2013\/07\/jake\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jake taught us how to say goodbye<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11030\" src=\"http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2002-04-01-dizzy2.jpg\" alt=\"2002-04-01 dizzy2\" width=\"590\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2002-04-01-dizzy2.jpg 590w, http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2002-04-01-dizzy2-300x243.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unlike Jake, Dizzy didn&#8217;t join the family until after we&#8217;d moved into our current house. It&#8217;s the only home she&#8217;s ever known, and the only place she&#8217;s ever been entirely comfortable. Road trips were never her thing; visiting our friends homes made her anxious and clingy.<\/p>\n<p>But at home? I wasn&#8217;t sure she&#8217;d survive that, but she did (it&#8217;s been almost a year, give or take a few weeks).<\/p>\n<p>Booker helped. Dizzy &#8211; still the perpetual puppy, even at twelve years old &#8211; actually played and rough housed with him in the backyard. Booker never knew Dizzy was anything other than ready to play.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But things got harder and harder. Her vision got worse (which I didn&#8217;t think was possible). Her hearing went (and went quickly, like her sight), leaving her unable to even navigate to the sound of our voices. More and more often, we had to rescue her from rooms where she&#8217;d got turned around and &#8216;trapped&#8217;&#8230; in the house she&#8217;d lived in her entire life.<\/p>\n<p>Her appetite faded.<\/p>\n<p>She was just <em>tired <\/em>and, worse than that, without most of her hearing and sight, she seemed <em>alone<\/em>, even in a room full of her family.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2009-11-15-Dizzy-004.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11037\" src=\"http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2009-11-15-Dizzy-004.jpg\" alt=\"2009-11-15 Dizzy 004\" width=\"512\" srcset=\"http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2009-11-15-Dizzy-004.jpg 1944w, http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2009-11-15-Dizzy-004-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/doycetesterman.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2009-11-15-Dizzy-004-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s the last thing you want for your pet: for them to think you&#8217;ve left them behind &#8211; to think it&#8217;s just them, alone, in the end.<\/p>\n<p>Because it isn&#8217;t. You hurt with them, for all they&#8217;ll never know it and, because they hurt, you make the hard choices.<\/p>\n<p>Hard choices.<\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, the same vet that came to visit Jake a year ago came to see Dizzy.<\/p>\n<p>We said our goodbyes. We told her thank you.
