I follow close to 300, but realistically, most of those people are not "active" tweeters. Half tweet only occasionally, I'd say.

I know what you mean. It's (usually) not a mutual admiration society, and it dilutes the power and usefulness of the thing when people try to make it so.

I mean, if I followed every single person who followed me, I'd never actually READ twitter, because there'd be too much noise to make the signal viable. (Or, since I use Brizzly, I'd have almost all of those people secretly muted, which seems... disingenuous.)

Some genius determined that a human is only wired to care about roughly 150 other people, max -- not-coincidentally, that's roughly the size of your basic village. Anytime I see someone following some multiple of 150, there's a faint whiff of bovine excrement.

Me? I'm just being as honest I can -- not everyone who follows me is someone I have the bandwidth (or, in honesty, will) to care about in return.

Twitter actually has a lot of little behaviors I wish would curl up and die.

I love #followfriday, because I genuinely do find interesting people at which to gander -- but so often it's either done:

a) Without context (#ff @scrooby @momo @tonypoopers @blueballs @johnnycakes!)

or

b) Is done as just a handshake back and forth Friday after Friday -- which is nice and all, but certainly reaches a minimum of value after a couple-few weeks.

Word.

See, the reason I love the Twitters is *because* it doesn't demand reciprocity -- thus, those that treat it that way are breaking its intent.
