All the 'sci-fi' in that story was me hitting wikipedia for the typical makeup of asteroids and discovering that they're typically categorized by how much light they reflect (albedo). From there, laser-based surveys. The only thing that really matters in the long run -- sci-fi or whatever -- is the people: Daddy is sick and lets his little girl screw around on the computer while he dozes, and she made something go boom: that's a story most anyone would recognize.
